Well, September is over! And that means that September Doodle-A-Day is too.
I didn’t make it to the end of the month, but I made it pretty far, and a few of the pieces I did were more time consuming than I had planned, so I’m not too worried about it!
Here are the final bunch, Days 19 – 26…
Top Left: Day 19 – Something Sweet – I think this is my favourite of the month. I made a yarn pom pom for the ice cream, made the cone from felt and embroidered the detail, then made the sprinkles by snipping up bits of yarn. It was definitely the most time consuming, mainly due to the stitching on the cone.
Top Right: Day 20 – Uniform – The Queens Guard
Bottom Left: Day 21 – Bumpy – I used water colour paper which had the bumpy texture, and decided I wanted to play with patterns again, and chose pineapples as they themselves have a bumpy texture. I painted the pineapples with water colour, then once it had dried, drew the details on in pen.
Bottom Right: Day 22 – Attraction – Thinking along the lines of attraction-chemistry-love, and created a quick little illustration with overlapping layers.
Top Left: Day 23 – Balance – After the ice cream I wanted to play with felt more. The final piece is a circus seal balancing a ball, all the pieces are cut from felt and then I added embroidered details.
Top Right: Day 24 – Fast – Just a simple one, but I chose to d0 a Singer Porsche solely because of my boyfriend who is a car geek.
Bottom Left: Day 25 – Knowledge – A favourite Einstein Quote
Bottom Right: Day 26 – Look – Alice Through the Looking Glass
I really enjoyed this month. It was way more time consuming, but playing around with some different things like fabric, water colours and cut outs, was a lot of fun.
I think I’ll give the next few month a miss, but I’m looking forward to having a go at a few more monthly challenges in the new year, possibly sticking to themes though, maybe patterns, a full month of lettering, or maybe a craft themed one.
I’ve been catching up with my doodles and here are days 11-18!
I played around a little bit more with these ones, trying a few different mediums as I’d been relying a little too much on illustrator.
Top Left: Day 11 – Blue – I went for a bird, and created it using layers of coloured card, which I then coloured with pencil. It didn’t work out quite how I wanted though.
Top Right: Day 12 – Remember – A geometric elephant, as elephants never forget.
Bottom Left: Day 13 – Grandparent – I’d wanted to have a go at making a 3D candy image in illustrator for a while (don’t ask me why, I’ve no idea, I wanted to play with the shineyness and transparency but in a vector format I guess) I figured this might be a good opportunity as ‘grandparent’ made me think of werther’s original.
Bottom Right: Day 14 – Produce – I went for fresh produce, and chose tomatoes. I played around with patterns but then I got the tomato song in my head and decided to use that instead and do some brush lettering with some water colour paints.
Top Left: Day 15 – Hat – Playing around with the copic markers again. A little Autumnal doodle.
Top Right: Day 16 – Build – I wanted the build aspect of this be that I actually made something, so I created this gingerbread house using an Amazon delivery envelope, and used the perforated edge as the edging for the roof, then doodled all over it with chalk pens. They were a little on the chunky side so its messier than Id have preferred, but it’s still kind of cute!
Bottom Left: Day 17 – Athletic – For this one I’d planned to do something inspired by attending the Blenham Triathlon over the summer, I was spending a little too much time faffing on with it, and had planned to spend no more than 30 mins to an hour per day on the doodles, so I ended up playing round with just the bike instead.
Bottom Right: Day 18 – Spy – A disguise, just what every spy needs when they’re undercover!
I have a few more crafty ones coming up before the end of the month too!
So I’ve been on holiday for a week (which was lovely), but now I’m back and I’m still catching up with my doodle-a-day’s, but I also forgot to post the ones from before I left, so here’s a mini dump of images for you!
Clockwise from top left:
Day 5 – Transparent – a collage created in illustrator using different textures
Day 7 – Labor/Labour – I really struggled with an idea I liked for this one, in the end I played around with images of tools in illustrator and was really happy with the kaleidoscopic results!
Day 9 – Inspirational Quote – This was a forgotten doodle I found in my sketchbook a few days earlier, so I decided to just clean it up and use it for the days image.
Day 8 – Wander – I decided it was time to do some lettering when this one came around – hand drawn and then tinkered with in illustrator.
I haven’t included Day 6 as I used an image from my portfolio, but you can see it here. I had plans for Day 10, but packing and prepping for my holiday got in the way so I kinda missed it out, I may go back at the end and finish it though.
I’m still enjoying experimenting with different techniques, and have a few more new things coming up, so watch this space… or, y’know, my instagram…
The prompt for Day 4 is ‘Spark’.
I knew when I started the challenge that I wanted to have a go at making a GIF at some point, as I wasn’t sure how to and would have to learn.
I had a few ideas for Spark but settled on Sparkler as I knew it would be straight forward to animate and I could do it within my time limit. I also didn’t want to make it too challenging as it was more about learning how to make a GIF.
I started by illustrating my sparkler and then created 10 versions where the sparks were varied.
Turns out that making a GIF is pretty straight forward after all. I just imported all my images into photoshop, created a timeline with each layer as a frame, exported as a GIF and tah dah!
So not the challenge I expected, but still, I know how to do it now and that was the point!
I’m pretty pleased with the result, and all done before I started work this morning
Mind you, I prefer the version on my Instagram as I used a filter which I think improves the glow!
All this miserable rainy weather, and now playing with sparklers, has me all excited about Winter and Bonfire Night!
This week has been manic. MANIC.
Day 3 of the doodle-a-day challenge was the busiest yet, so I needed to do something a little quicker, and thought it would be a good opportunity to do something hand drawn.
The prompt for the day was ‘New’. I struggled a little with what to do, but in the end I went for ‘new shoes’, which for me is always Converse. Always.
Also, I finally had a play with the Copic markers I bought a while back! I bought a small 5 pack on sale in Cass Art in flesh tones, just to mess about with as I’ve never used them before, and as I wanted this months challenge to be about experimenting a little, I decided to include them too!
Do you use Copic markers? Do you have any tips for a newby?!
